Meet Visit Jax Insider: Jill Cruz

I am a Jacksonville native who has always loved food. Like all picky kids, I lived on chicken tenders, mac and cheese, and cheap ramen noodle packs. But as I grew older I realized that I was missing out on a lot of great foods, especially different cuisines.

I started venturing out and trying new things, and in 2011 I decided to chronicle my journey in a blog dedicated to honest restaurant reviews based on my experiences. Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of watching our city grow and change into what it is today. Jacksonville is quickly becoming a food destination and I’m happy to contribute anything I can to achieving that goal.

1. What do you love most about Jacksonville?

I love Jacksonville is not just one thing, we have something for everyone. With plenty of beaches to choose from, a NFL team, multiple outdoor shopping malls, and a variety of local restaurants, we have it all.

2. What is one thing you tell a visitor that they must see/do when in Jax?

Visit a couple of our fantastic food trucks. We have some extremely talented chefs and a variety of different cuisines.

3. Where is your favorite local spot to eat?

The Happy Grilled Cheese. They were one of our first food trucks when they opened in 2013, and have since expanded into 2 brick and mortar restaurants and a second food truck located in Austin TX. Their menu consists mostly of grilled cheese sandwiches, about 30 different kinds. They have everything from a basic grilled cheese to one loaded with three cheeses, mozzarella sticks, mac & cheese, bacon & tomato soup drizzle (my personal favorite, the OMG Melt). The perfect comfort food after a long day.
