Cool Down This Summer with These Sweet Treats in Jacksonville

Summertime is here in Jax and The Melanin Market team suggests three sweet treats to stay cool in the Sunshine State. We are lucky to have an extensive network of Black-owned businesses in Jacksonville that provide stellar service. Next time you’re in our city, don’t forget to check out these local favorites.

The Honey Dripper House

When the temperature outside is at its hottest, the natives of Jacksonville’s Historic Eastside know there is only one place to go, The Honey Dripper House. If you plan to travel around Florida, you may hear different names for this frozen delicacy: flip cups, lilly dillies, freeze cups, Florida water, etc. However, here in Duval County, they are known as Honey Drippers. A syrupy Kool-Aid with chunks of fruit frozen to the core in a disposable cup. Our friends at Honey Dripper House offer all kinds of delicious flavors like green apple, blueberry, or pina colada. Our favorite flavor is Just Mango. We suggest you don’t take too long to eat yours. When the sun begins to melt the ice, you’ll find out where they got their name. The treats are perfect for a relaxing stroll on the Riverwalk.

Springfield Scoops

If you look to beat the heat while enjoying your treat, then head over to historic Springfield. Located on Main Street, you will find the cutest ice cream shop, Springfield Scoops, another adorned affiliate of the Melanin Market. Dine in and enjoy some creamy desserts like sundaes, banana splits, or waffle cones. Their flavor choices are delicious and addictive with all the toppings you can think of.

ICECAPADE

Looking for the perfect option to maintain your summer body while soaking up the sun? Then look no further than Pearl Street’s own ICECAPADE. They offer premium artisanal ice pop desserts handcrafted from all-natural fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices. ICECAPADE boasts large collections of pops with various flavors and holistic values. The collections range from detox to botanical options; our favorite has to be the alcohol-infused fruit bars – you’re on a diet, not us! They also offer other holistic goodies like smoothies, juices, and teas. Even if you don’t go for the ice pops, they have plenty of natural holistic options to keep your temperature down.

We highlight black-owned businesses, like the ones mentioned above, while providing creative place-making outlets for community fellowship. We are grateful to call Jacksonville “home,” as it creates a great base to accomplish our mission. Jacksonville’s Historic Eastside is where we laid our roots in memory of the bustling economic hub for minority-owned businesses before the 1969 race riots. The Melanin Market team has pledged as community servants to regenerate Jacksonville’s historic minority district.
