Explore Hidden Gems in the River City
Jacksonville is proudly dubbed the “River City” by locals, thanks to the vast St. Johns River that flows through its metropolis. When you explore Jacksonville, you’ll likely drive over a bridge or two and get a view of what is arguably the city’s most important natural asset.
If you’re visiting our water-centric city, you’d be remiss not to add exploring the St. Johns watershed to your agenda. Whether you like to get out into nature and forget you’re in a big city, or you prefer to stay within a few blocks of a good coffee shop, there is an activity along the river for you to enjoy in Jacksonville. Below are a few of my top picks.
Take a Hike at the Theodore Roosevelt Area
Check the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve off your National Parks bucket list! My favorite place to explore in the preserve is the Theodore Roosevelt Area. It’s one of those spaces in Jax you can step into and feel like you’re completely separated from the hustle and bustle. The trails vary from wooded dirt pathways to sandy routes as you get closer to the breathtaking view of the water. If you enjoy history, nature and wildlife, this is a must-visit.
Find the Waterfall at Bulls Bay Preserve
Thought you had to venture north to find a waterfall hike? Think again! This Jacksonville waterfall might not be as tall as her counterparts in higher altitudes, but Bulls Bay is a hidden gem in Jacksonville that is absolutely worth a visit. This park actually sits along the Cedar River, which flows into the St. Johns.
Get in the Water (Or Not) from Tommy Hazouri Sr. Park
Looking to get even closer to Jacksonville’s waterways? You can rent a paddleboard on an hourly basis from Tommy Hazouri Sr. Park in Mandarin to explore Julington Creek, another tributary of the St. Johns. Whether or not you’re feeling that adventurous, this is a great park for the whole family complete with a playground, fishing docks, hiking trails, boat ramp and even pickleball courts.
